How do I know if the Tongue & Groove Easy Hanger supports the dimensions of my planks? Ignore the Nominal Size and pay attention to the Net/Actual Size. For example, a 2×4 isn’t actually 2″ x 4″, but that is the Nominal Size and how it is advertised. The true dimensions of a 2×4 are actually 1.5″ x 3.5″. When the plank is first rough sawn from a log it has a Nominal Size of 2″ x 4″. However, the drying process, planing, and finishing reduce it to the finished Net/Actual size of 1.5″ x 3.5″.
Nominal Size = 2 x 4 vs. Net/Actual Size = 1.5 x 3.5
The same is true for tongue & groove, and shiplap planks. Below is an example diagram that shows the Net/Actual size of tongue & groove planks. Then also shows the Nominal Size vs. the actual Net Thickness and Net Width in the product description. The tongue & groove examples in the image below are just some of the planks that have Net/Actual thickness dimensions that are supported by the Tongue and Groove Easy Hanger, because they are equal to or are less than 13/16th inch (20.63mm) in thickness – 3/4″, 23/32″ and 9/16″.
